Iconic
Version 0.9.2

What is this thing?
This program is intended as a developer tool to assist in the development of toolbar icons for OpenOffice, NeoOffice, and StarOffice. In this version, development is limited to Mac OS X, but icon sets developed with this tool can be used on any platform. Windows and Linux compatibilty will be along shortly.

However, it is also a great tool for non-developers. If you want to change your icon set for OpenOffice, NeoOffice, and StarOffice, this tool does it easily and without you needing to have any detailed understanding of "what's under the bonnet". And you can revert to the original settings without any harm.

This program began as NeoIconer, but has been re-written from scratch as a visual tool. It is designed for you to be able to use it “out of the box”
NOTE: NeoOffice 2.0 users be sure to download and run the permissions fix program!???

Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.3 or later. Firefox 1.5 or later. NeoOffice 2.0.x -or- OpenOffice for Mac 2.0.x

Installation (super easy!):
If you are using NeoOffice: Be sure to download and run the permissionsix.
If you are using OpenOffice for Mac: Contact me for information on configuring the program.???

1. Put the program in its own folder
...such as /Applications/Iconic/ in OS X, or your Programs directory in Windows.
This directory will be the program's 'root' directory (folder)
2. Put icon sets in your root folder
Iconic ships with a few sample icon sets. Hopefully there will be more to download soon. Placing icon sets into your root directory should make them visible to Iconic the next time you run it. To do that, you download the iconset and move it to the root directory that you set up above (ie /Applications/Iconic/ in OS X or your Programs directory in Windows)
NOTE: Office 2.0 uses different icon names from previous versions, so icon sets that don't specifically say they will work with Iconic probably won't. Sorry.
NOTE: to create a new iconset, just create a new directory in your root (Iconic) directory and start putting your icons into it.
3. Run it.
Just click on the Iconic icon and you're off!

Iconic Interface: The Main Screen

Iconic main screen
The main screen is comprised of three parts. On the left, is Icon Set Area, to the right is the Program Area, and at the bottom is the Message Area.  Below, we explain the function of each area.

Icon Set Area
KDE_select butt
The first line is a drop-down menu which lets you pick from icon sets. It will list anything in your root directory that is a directory.  For instance, in this case, you have a directory (folder) named KDE-large in your root directory (your Iconic folder) and this will be installed if you click on the correct buttons now.
The 2nd line is the selected icon's name and the dimensions of a single icon from that set. In this case, KDE-large has been selected. Its icons are 24 pixels by 24 pixels.
The 3rd line is how the iconset is classified. Complete icon sets for Office include large and small iconsets, in both high and regular contrast.
The 4th line is a sample imagestrip of the icons from the selected set. In this case, it's the KDE icons.

imagestrip

The 5th line has two buttons:

view icons  allows you to browse the existing icons in your set, compare them with original icons, and identify what icons aren't in your set.
NOTE: On the View Icons screen, a broken image means the icon doesn't exist (I'll clean it up soon)

iconset settings butt  brings the Iconset Settings screen up in the Program Area (see below.)

Program AreaThis area can change when various buttons are selected.
The default contains two buttons:

replace butt  this big button is what makes it happen: it takes your selected iconset and installs it into your copy of office according to the settings you have selected.

program options  brings the Program Options screen up in the Program Area (see  below.)

Message AreaThis is where the program will tell you what it is doing, and also tell you about any errors it had.

The program will tell you when it has completed whatever tasks it is trying to do, and it's generally a good idea to wait for it to do so.

Iconset Settings Screen
When you select the Iconset Settings button in the Icon Set Area, the Iconset Settings window appears.

Iconset_settings_screen

Look to the right side of the screen;

Two_radio_buttons  the first part consists of two radio buttons, allowing you to declare if your icon set is large or small, high or regular contrast.

Reset_imagestrip_but   the second part is a button, 'Reset sample icon Imagestrip'. Pressing this will rebuild the sample icon stripe in Icon Set Area. This is useful if you have added icons since it was first built.

The bottom part is two buttons:

cancel   close Iconset Settings without saving your settings
save butt   save your settings and close window.

Program Options Screen
When you select the 'Program options' button in the Program Area, the Program Options window appears.

Program_options_screen

neo butt   At the top is a drop-down that allows you to select which version of office you would like to work on. (NOTE: Currently only NeoOffice is supported by this section)

Below that, there are two buttons:

refresh base   this button will refresh the icons you are building on top of from the office program. Useful if you are switching the icon set you are  working with, as it will prevent strays from the old iconset from getting in the new one.

restore butt   this button removes your custom icons from your office program, so that it will appear as it did when you first installed it.

The final line is a 'Return' button. It closes the Program Options window.

How you can get your icons included:
There's no formal process just yet. I'm less of a gatherer than a hacker, but if you send me something I will pass it on to those who might do something with it.  Please don't send me anything copyrighted, either by yourself or others. That's in bad taste.

How to uninstall Iconic
Select the 'Restore Office Icons” button in Program Options screen, then delete the 'root' directory into which you installed Iconic.
To-dos: (as with most to-do lists, ideas will always out-pace development. Feel free to let me know what is important to you and what is missing.)
I have a long list.
